Filing Returns on iTax

Filing tax returns is a legal obligation for every Kenyan with an active KRA PIN. Thanks to the Kenya Revenue Authority’s (KRA) iTax system, this process can now be done easily online — no need to visit KRA offices or Huduma Centres. Whether you're employed, self-employed, running a business, or currently unemployed, it’s important to understand how iTax works to stay compliant and avoid penalties.

What is iTax?

iTax is KRA’s official online platform for managing tax-related services, including registration, filing tax returns, making payments, and generating tax compliance certificates. The platform has been instrumental in digitizing Kenya’s tax system and making it more accessible and efficient.

Who Should File Returns?

If you have an active KRA PIN, you're required to file your returns — even if you didn’t earn any income during the year. This includes:

  • Employed individuals (PAYE contributors)

  • Self-employed persons

  • Business owners

  • Students or unemployed people with PINs

  • Registered companies and partnerships

Why File Returns?

Filing returns ensures:

  • Compliance with the law

  • Avoidance of penalties (KShs 2,000 for individuals, KShs 20,000 for companies)

  • Eligibility for government services, job applications, tenders, and loans

  • A valid Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC)

When Should You File?

Tax returns must be filed between January 1st and June 30th every year for the previous calendar year. Filing after the deadline attracts penalties.

How to File Returns on iTax (For Individuals)

1. Access the iTax Portal

Go to https://itax.kra.go.ke
Login with your KRA PIN and password.

2. Navigate to File Returns

Click on the "Returns" menu and select "File Return".

3. Choose Return Type

Select Income Tax - Resident Individual (for most salaried or self-employed individuals).
If you had no income, choose Nil Return.

4. Fill in Return Details

  • Download the Excel return form (if applicable).

  • Enter your income details, tax paid (PAYE), and reliefs.

  • Validate the form, zip it, and upload on iTax.

5. Submit and Download Acknowledgement

Once submitted, download your Acknowledgment Receipt — proof that you've filed.

Filing Nil Returns?

If you didn’t earn any income:

  • Select “Nil Return”

  • Confirm no income was received

  • Submit directly without uploading any form

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Filing late

  • Using wrong forms

  • Failing to include all sources of income

  • Not filing at all despite having a PIN

Final Advice

Always file your returns on time — it takes just a few minutes on iTax. If you’re unsure how to go about it, consider consulting a licensed tax agent or accountant. Compliance saves you money and opens doors to professional opportunities.
