Employers to meet SHIF Registration deadline by September 30

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has issued a directive to all employers, emphasizing the importance of registering their staff for the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) before the upcoming September 30, 2024 deadline. SHIF will officially replace the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) on October 1, 2024, as per the Social Health Act 2023.

Employers must use the SHA Employer Portal (Access it here) to register employees, manage contributions, and update their records. This transition is a major step toward Universal Health Coverage, and timely compliance by employers is critical to avoiding disruptions in healthcare services for their employees.

Over 1.2 million Kenyans have already registered, and the government is driving public awareness efforts. The Ministries of Education, Energy, and ICT are aiding the registration process by supporting connectivity and facilitating student and employee sign-ups.

SHIF contributions are set at 2.75% of an employee’s gross salary, with enhanced benefits like digitized services, reduced premiums, and government support for vulnerable populations. Employers are urged to meet the deadline to ensure uninterrupted healthcare coverage for their teams.
